In a remarkable demonstration of service, innovation, and humanity, Andrew Paul Nkom, a 2021 graduate of Architecture from Kaduna State University (KASU), has been honoured with the President’s NYSC Honour Award for his outstanding contributions during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Kogi State.

Assigned to the Headquarters Command Army Records Cantonment Maintenance Group, Nigerian Army Engineers, Nkom went far beyond his official duties to address the pressing needs of the Lokoja School for the Deaf. Using his professional skills, he embarked on a series of life-changing projects aimed at improving both the learning and sanitary conditions of the school.

As part of his Community Development Service (CDS), he constructed and donated 100 wooden reading tables and chairs, giving students a comfortable and dignified space for study. He also built a modern soak-away system to enhance sanitation, and rehabilitated the school’s dilapidated toilets, restoring hygiene, safety, and convenience for both staff and students.

These interventions not only improved the school’s infrastructure but also transformed the daily experiences of its students, creating an environment where learning and well-being can thrive.

In recognition of his exceptional impact, the Kogi State Government, in partnership with the NYSC, presented Nkom with a Certificate of Honour at the end of his service year. The prestigious President’s NYSC Honour Award, one of the highest distinctions for corps members is reserved for those whose service leaves an enduring mark on their host communities.

Commending the achievement, the Management of Kaduna State University lauded the university’s management, noting that Nkom’s service is a shining example of KASU graduates raising the institution’s profile and contributing meaningfully to national development.

Andrew Paul Nkom’s story stands as proof that with skill, compassion, and dedication, a single individual can uplift an entire community.
