The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading private universities, consolidating its position among the top institutions in the country according to the latest global rankings.
The ranking, based on the 2026 AD Scientific Index, highlights MAAUN as a fast-rising academic powerhouse, coming third among Nigeria’s private universities and gaining increasing global recognition for research output and innovation.
Founded in 2021 and located in Kano, MAAUN has quickly built a reputation for delivering globally competitive education, particularly in health sciences, business, and social sciences. Analysts say its rapid growth reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, where newer private universities are beginning to rival long-established institutions.
Despite MAAUN’s strong showing, Covenant University retains the top position among private universities in Nigeria, followed by Afe Babalola University, both of which continue to dominate in research and academic excellence.
