The Hajj 2025 marks the first pilgrimage exercise under the leadership of Professor Abdullahi Usman, the newly appointed Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). His stewardship has already drawn praise from stakeholders and observers across the country.
From smooth logistics to enhanced pilgrim welfare, several strategic actions and innovations ensured a seamless and spiritually rewarding journey for Nigerian pilgrims.
It all began on May 9 when the first set of intending pilgrims departed Nigeria for the holy land. It was a beginig of credence and passion from all the team including the hardworking energetic NAHCON staff.
So far it was a taste of time even from pilgrims who are already in Makkah preparing for the Hajj ritual at the moment.
The Hajj which begins from June 4 to June 9, operations fronm the NAHCON’s end are being executed with a high level of diligence and precision. NAHCON has pledged to leave no stone unturned in ensuring a smooth, safe, and spiritually fulfilling experience for Nigerian pilgrims.
The Success story so far
1. Early and strategic planning by NAHCON
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), under the leadership of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, initiated preparations far ahead of time. With clear direction, stakeholder engagement, and operational planning, the Commission laid a strong foundation that guided all subsequent phases of the Hajj.
2. Effective stakeholder engagement
The 2nd National Stakeholders’ Summit held in April 2025 brought together all players in the Hajj value chain — state pilgrims boards, tour operators, banks, airlines, and regulatory bodies. This fostered unity of purpose under the theme “Sustainable Hajj Financing,” and ensured every actor was aligned before the season kicked off.
3. Expanded Hajj Savings Scheme
With the inclusion of Alternative Bank, TAJ Bank, and Lotus Bank into the Hajj Savings Scheme, more intending pilgrims had access to non-interest, Shari’ah-compliant financing options. This provided a structured path for thousands to save and plan ahead for the pilgrimage.
4. Robust government support
From the President to state governors and federal ministries, government support was unwavering. The provision of Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) in cash gave pilgrims timely access to funds and helped operators navigate foreign exchange challenges smoothly.
5. World-Class arrangements in Masha’ir
NAHCON’s dedication to ensuring pilgrims had a dignified and spiritually fulfilling stay in Masha’ir — Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah — was widely applauded. Comfortable tents and logistical arrangements allowed pilgrims to focus on worship with ease. Notably, VIP pilgrims were accommodated in World-Class Tent A, marking a first-time achievement in premium service delivery for Nigerian pilgrims.
6. Timely outbound airlift
The Federal Government licensed four airlines early enough to ensure the timely and organized airlift of over 40,000 pilgrims from state boards and more than 14,000 from private operators. The inaugural flight on May 9, 2025, commenced smoothly, with coordinated schedules and minimal delays.
7. Prompt issuance of NUSUK cards
NAHCON ensured that Nigerian pilgrims received their NUSUK cards on time, a crucial requirement by Saudi authorities for identity verification, access control, and health services. This proactive move prevented delays and ensured compliance with Saudi regulations.
8. Innovative, Tech-Driven operations
Digital platforms for registration, data management, and flight scheduling enabled real-time updates and enhanced communication between pilgrims, handlers, and authorities. These tools minimized errors and improved operational accuracy.
9. Visionary leadership
This being his first Hajj season as Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman’s leadership has been characterized by transparency, efficiency, and a deep commitment to service. His strategic direction and accountability have re-energized NAHCON’s operations.
10. Strengthened health and welfare systems
NAHCON deployed well-equipped health teams and ensured adequate care for elderly and vulnerable pilgrims. Accommodation, feeding, and transport were improved across the board, with consistent feedback mechanisms in place to resolve issues swiftly.
Hajj 2025 has set a new benchmark for excellence in pilgrimage operations. With strong leadership, early planning, financial innovation, comfortable accommodations in the holy sites, and a deep respect for the spiritual journey of pilgrims, NAHCON has demonstrated that excellence in Hajj operations is achievable — and sustainable.
