His one-year appointment ended in May 2026 and was not renewed. He is therefore no longer affiliated with MAAUN,” the statement said.

The university explained that visiting lecturers are employed on renewable one-year contracts, with renewals based on institutional needs, management approval and satisfactory performance. It noted that Dr Gwadabe’s appointment expired alongside those of several other visiting lecturers whose contracts also ended during the same period.

The management urged media organisations and the public to report the matter accurately and avoid describing the former lecturer as a current member of the university’s academic staff.

MAAUN reiterates anti-harassment policy

While distancing itself from the allegations, MAAUN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment, abuse and other forms of misconduct.

According to the university, its Founder has introduced a ₦5 million reward for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or sexual assault involving any lecturer or staff member through the institution’s approved reporting channels.

The university described the initiative as part of broader measures to encourage victims to speak up without fear and to strengthen accountability within the institution.

MAAUN also dismissed as false reports claiming that a student was delayed by two academic sessions because of the incident or that a postgraduate student was among the alleged victims, maintaining that those claims do not reflect the facts available to the university.

The institution urged members of the public to rely on verified information and refrain from circulating misleading claims capable of damaging reputations.

Growing reputation

Founded by renowned education entrepreneur Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, MAAUN has emerged as one of Nigeria’s fast-growing private universities, attracting students from across Nigeria and several African countries.

The university has continued to expand its academic offerings across medicine, nursing, engineering, computing, health sciences, social sciences and management disciplines, while investing in modern laboratories, digital learning infrastructure, research and international collaborations.

In recent years, MAAUN has also received national and international recognition for its commitment to quality education, innovation and human capital development. The institution has consistently highlighted student welfare, academic excellence and ethical conduct as core values guiding its operations.

The management said those principles remain central to the university’s administration and pledged to continue implementing policies that protect students, promote accountability and preserve the integrity of its academic environment.

It reiterated that Dr Gwadabe ceased to be affiliated with MAAUN following the expiration of his contract in May 2026 and should not be presented as a serving lecturer of the institution.

The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has distanced itself from sexual harassment allegations involving a former visiting lecturer, insisting that the academic is no longer an employee of the institution and should not be identified as a serving member of its staff.
