From Commerce To Knowledge Hub: MAAUN, BUK Raise Kano’s Academic Profile, make Nigerian universities ranking list

Must read

The inclusion of Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in the shortlist for the Nigerian Universities Ranking is a significant development for Kano State and a welcome boost for the country’s higher education sector.

The two Kano-based institutions are among a select group of Nigerian universities shortlisted for the ranking, alongside prominent institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the University of Lagos; Abia State University; Bowen University; and Bingham University.

Although the final ranking is yet to be released, the appearance of BUK and MAAUN on the shortlist is already a source of pride for Kano. It highlights the growing visibility of the state’s universities and their increasing contribution to teaching, research, innovation and human capital development.

For decades, Kano has been widely recognised as Nigeria’s “Centre of Commerce.” But the rapid expansion of its higher education sector is gradually adding another dimension to the state’s identity — that of a growing centre of knowledge, scholarship and research.

The transformation has been remarkable. Kano now has two state-owned universities, two federal universities and several private universities, with thousands of students enrolled in higher education institutions across the state.

This represents a significant shift from about 15 years ago, when the state had only one federal university and no private university.

BUK’s longstanding academic reputation

Bayero University Kano has for decades occupied an important position in Nigeria’s higher education landscape. The institution has produced generations of graduates, academics, researchers and professionals who have contributed to national development.

Its longstanding contributions to teaching, research and scholarship have established BUK as one of the country’s prominent universities.

Its inclusion in the latest Nigerian Universities Ranking shortlist therefore reinforces its established reputation and reflects the institution’s continued relevance within Nigeria’s competitive higher education environment.

MAAUN’s rising profile

For MAAUN, the shortlist represents another milestone in the growing visibility of private higher education in Kano.

The university has, in recent years, attracted increasing attention through its performance and visibility in various academic and university ranking exercises, including the AD Scientific Index and Times Higher Education.

Its inclusion alongside some of Nigeria’s established universities in the latest ranking shortlist further underscores the growing profile of the institution and the expanding role of private universities in the country’s higher education system.

More than a competition

University rankings should not be viewed simply as a contest for positions on a league table.

When properly designed and interpreted, rankings can encourage universities to strengthen teaching quality, research output, academic standards, innovation, international collaboration and their wider contribution to society.

They can also provide institutions with useful benchmarks for identifying areas requiring improvement while encouraging healthy competition within the sector.

For Kano, the presence of BUK and MAAUN on the shortlist is therefore more than a matter of institutional recognition. It is an indication of the state’s expanding contribution to Nigeria’s academic and intellectual landscape.

As the country awaits the release of the final Nigerian Universities Ranking, Kano can already take pride in having two of its leading universities represented among the shortlisted institutions.

The story of Kano is no longer defined by commerce alone. With the continued growth and diversification of its universities, the state is steadily emerging as an important centre of education, knowledge, research and human capital development.

BUK and MAAUN are increasingly becoming important parts of that transformation.
