The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted a permanent operating licence to the Franco-British International University (FBIU), while extending the provisional licence of the Canadian University of Nigeria (CUN).
The development was announced in the September 2026 edition of the MAAUN News Special Bulletin, a publication of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN).
The latest approval represents another milestone for the university group founded by Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, which has continued to expand its presence in the Nigerian higher education sector.
According to the bulletin, the permanent licence for FBIU was issued by the NUC following the regulatory process required for the establishment and operation of private universities in Nigeria.
The commission also extended the provisional licence granted to the Canadian University of Nigeria, Abuja, allowing the institution to continue its operations under the terms of the approval.
The development comes amid growing investment by private institutions in Nigeria’s university education sector, with increasing emphasis on international collaborations, professional programmes and global-standard learning environments.
The September edition of MAAUN News, marked as its 23rd edition, also reported that the Medical Laboratory Scientists conferred honorary membership on Prof. Gwarzo.
The bulletin further highlighted MAAUN Nigeria’s hosting of UK international development experts as part of its growing international engagements.
The latest regulatory approvals add to the expansion of institutions associated with Prof. Gwarzo, who has established a number of higher education initiatives in Nigeria and beyond.
