Kaduna State University (KASU) has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence academic activities at its Distance Learning Institute (DLI), a major step in the university’s drive to expand access to higher education through flexible learning.
The approval, conveyed in a letter dated 15 July 2026 and signed by the NUC Executive Secretary, followed the commission’s assessment of the university’s preparedness to operate the institute in line with national standards for open and distance learning.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university described the approval as a significant milestone that reinforces its commitment to widening access to quality university education, particularly for working-class professionals, entrepreneurs and other learners who may be unable to attend conventional full-time programmes.
According to KASU, the institute will leverage digital technologies to deliver flexible, learner-centred academic programmes while maintaining the quality assurance standards prescribed by the NUC.
The university said the initiative aligns with its vision of promoting innovation, inclusiveness and excellence in teaching and learning.
The approval also comes months after the university intensified efforts to strengthen its distance learning programme, including discussions with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) on partnerships in digital learning, entrepreneurship and graduate employability.
Distance learning has become an increasingly important component of Nigeria’s higher education system, with the NUC approving similar centres in several universities to improve access to tertiary education through technology-enabled learning.
